Anouar Brahem has received the 2010 German Echo Jazz Award for his album "The Astounding Eyes of Rita" (ECM Records). Brahem took first place in the category Instrumentalist of the Year, International, other instruments. The prestigious Echo Deutscher Musikpreis Awards are attributed annually by the Deutsche Phono-Akademie, the German record-company association. The Echo Deutscher Musikpreis, the German equivalent of the Grammy, is widely considered the most important music prize in Germany and has been awarded in a variety of genres since 1992. The Award honours outstanding and successful achievements by national and international artists. According to the Jury: "An oud-player who explores hidden areas of sound and, in long and caring reflexion, has immersed himself in the history of Arabic and more generally Islamic art music." "Fascinated by film, theatre and dance, he looks for musical traces in other artistic genres in order to transform them into a musical distillate: Elegance, transparency, simplicity and, most important of all, a unique, incomparable style and sound."
